January

Plant of the Month

Arctostaphylos, or manzanita. They are winter-blooming plants with flowers that range from pink to white. Striking as specimens with their red bark, these slow-growing, low-water plants come in many shapes and sizes. They also provide food for hummingbirds and native bees. If you want a true beauty in your garden and have the patience to let it grow gracefully, then Arctostaphylos are the plants for you.

Garden Tips

The cooler, shorter days of late fall through winter are the signal that it’s time to plant- so there’s no time to lose! Typically, late November thru early February is the time when the soil is both cooler AND moister… but rainfall or not, new native trees and shrubs need these cooler months to get established, before the hotter months return.

What does “get established” mean? Newly planted natives need time to set their roots and get accustomed to your garden’s soil and conditions. The cooler months are also the time when many native plants do the majority of their growing for the year, before they slow down to conserve energy in the hotter, drier months.

California typically receives the majority of its rainfall during the winter months, and this has not been a typical season. To avoid drought-stress, you may need to give your plants supplemental water to make up for the lack of rain. How much you will need to water depends on what plants you have in your garden, the sun exposure of your garden, your microclimate, and your soil. Aim to replicate what would normally be our “wet season”.

To up your odds of success:

- Plant when the soil is cool and moist (for most of us, this will be late fall thru early winter).

- Plant during the cooler part of the day (before noon)

- Make sure each plant has a nice flat basin around it, with a berm around the edge to prevent runoff

- On planting day, give your new natives PLENTY of water – hand water with a GENTLE SHOWER, several gallons to each plant and the area surrounding each one.  This will insure that that water intended for your plant doesn’t get pulled away by the drier soil around it.

- Watering: Check the moisture level once per week until you have a “feel” for how often you need to water. DON’T rely on what the soil looks like at the surface. DO use a probe such as a long screwdriver.  Insert it about 4 inches away from the plant and push down to about root level. Then pull it out and feel the soil on the probe. Ideally, it should be slightly moist but not soggy or “dusty-dry.”

- At watering time, refill the basin once or twice.

- Your natives want YOU to be the timer, not an automatic system.
