Well over 100 families of plants are native to Southern California. An important step in learning to identify any plant species is recognizing to what taxonomic family the plant belongs. This class focuses on developing skills and practicing recognition of the key characters of 20 major plant families. Using fresh plant material, herbarium sheets, photographs, The Jepson Manual, and local field guides, participants will learn the analytical characters and use them in keying out and recognizing many difficult species of the major southern California plant families. These will be families that were not covered in Part I of the class.
