Encelia farinosa Daily activities Routine activities include mounting and filing new accessions, shipping and receiving loans, gifts, exchanges, and other specimen transactions, and generating new specimen folders, as well as associated record keeping. The RSABG herbarium technical staff is also taking a lead in collecting new specimens to be added to the herbarium. Particular attention is being given to documenting plants in threatened and/or highly developed areas of California, particularly in Riverside and Los Angeles Counties. RSA-POM Specimen Database The most exciting ongoing project at this time is data-basing our specimens from Southern California (the southern 10 counties). Of the estimated 360,000 California specimens in the herbarium, nearly 220,000 are from Southern California. We have now data-based over 208,250 of the Southern California specimens and hope to complete this task within the next year. These data greatly enhance accessibility to the herbarium's collection. It is relatively easy to extract data for a particular mountain range or county. RSA-POM Online Database The RSA-POM specimen database is now accessible through the internet. Currently the RSA-POM online database holds ca. 88,500 records representing 2,460 species and 180 families. As we continue to enter in data to the RSA-POM Specimen Database, the online database will be updated monthly.
Field Studies Program RSA currently participates in contract agreements with the Angeles and San Bernardino National Forests. Through these agreement RSA conducts general and focused botanical surveys, sensitive plant surveys, and rare plant monitoring. RSA has also collaborated with Angeles National Forest almost 10 years producing several species management guides and A Field Guide to the Rare Plants of the Angeles National Forest (pdf 16mb).
