The botanical wealth of California has inspired gardeners worldwide for over 200 years. Wherever winters are mild and rainy, and summers are warm and dry, California native plants can be expected to perform well once their needs are understood. In spite of their appeal, a variety of factors have resulted in the use of exotic plants in the cultivated landscape of California. Currently, our native plants are enjoying a well deserved renewal of popularity.
Since 1927 Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden has been at the forefront of the cultivation, and care and maintenance of California native flora, in addition to ongoing research, education and conservation. Our horticultural work is an essential component of the Living Collection, Seed Collection, Public Outreach and Education programs. Plants are also produced for the fall and spring plant sales, and for use in applied conservation projects. Additional information is available through our staff publications and horticultural symposia. For detailed information on caring for native plants, consult the English/Spanish manual, Care and Maintenance of Southern California Native Plant Gardens by Bart O'Brien, Betsey Landis and Ellen Mackey.
