Creative ways to support the Garden

After her death, Ms. Susanna Bixby Bryant's Rancho de Cañon de Santa Ana (originally in the Yorba Linda area) was sold and the current location established in Claremont in 1951. Her estate established the Garden's endowment.

By creating an irrevocable gift in your estate plans, you can be a part of the Garden's legacy as a Susanna Bixby Bryant Council member.

Joining the Susanna Bixby Bryant Council is an important step in supporting the Garden, and by adding your name, you may also encourage others to join you. If you have already made a bequest to the Garden, please let us know so that you may be properly thanked and recognized as a member of The Susanna Bixby Bryant Council.

Special recognition will be given in the Annual Honor Roll of Donors and Council members will be invited to the Majestic Oak Leadership Society Dinner. Donors who have made a bequest or other estate gift, but do not want public recognition, may join anonymously while still receiving invitations to events and activities.

Using Stocks, Bonds or Property to Make a Gift

Donating appreciated property may enable you to avoid paying capital gains tax, reduce your estate tax and receive an income tax deduction. If you have a loss on your investment, it is best to sell it first, deduct the loss on your taxes and then contribute the proceeds.

Bequests Through a Will or Living Trust

A gift through a will or living trust (bequest) is a popular way to provide significant long-term support. We accept bequests of any size or type. Some assets, such as retirement funds, may be especially advantageous to leave to charity. You may give a particular dollar amount, a specific property or a percentage of your estate. You may also make a gift of the residue of your estate, after providing for your loved ones. If you already have a will or living trust, you don't have to re-write it if you would like to include Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden; you may add a document (or codicil) to your existing documents. If you wish, you may designate your gift to a particular area or program within RSABG. We recommend that you discuss such a designation with us to be certain that we can carry out your intent.

Life Insurance

Life insurance can help you make a larger gift than you might have thought possible, while also increasing your total benefit to your loved ones and generating substantial tax advantages. You may name RSABG as a beneficiary and/or make a gift of the ownership interest in an existing policy. You may also create a new life insurance policy specifically to benefit RSABG.

Gifts with Income Retained for Life

Making a gift to the Garden while retaining life income is possible through a gift annuity or a charitable remainder trust.

Benefits may include:

  • Life income for you or another beneficiary
  • Immediate income tax deduction in the year of the gift, with a five-year carry forward privilege for excess contributions
  • Capital gains tax can be reduced or avoided on gifts of appreciated property
  • Estate and inheritance taxes can be reduced or eliminated

Donors wishing to make a substantial gift of securities or other property to the Garden are encouraged to call the Development Office at RSABG for further information. (909) 625-8767, ext. 222.
