February

Plant of the Month

Ceanothus (California lilac) are shrubs that come in many sizes and put on a lovely display of Purple and blue flower spikes in the Spring. They are perennials and the contrast between the dark green leaves and Purple to blue flowers make them stand out in a landscape. The flowers attract Bees, Hummingbirds and Butterflies to your garden and most Ceanothus have nicely scented flowers. This plant can be a focal point in your landscape or added in various places for a beautiful show.

February Gardening Tips

Late November thru early February is the time when the soil is still both cooler AND moister… but rainfall or not, new native trees and shrubs need these cooler months to get established, before the hotter months return.

What does “get established” mean? Newly planted natives need time to set their roots and get accustomed to your garden’s soil and conditions. The cooler months are also the time when many native plants do the majority of their growing for the year, before they slow down to conserve energy in the hotter, drier months.

To up your odds of success:

- Plant when the soil is cool and moist (for most of us, this will be late fall thru early winter).

- Plant during the cooler part of the day (before noon)

- Make sure each plant has a nice flat basin around it, with a berm around the edge to prevent runoff

You still have time to get those California wildflower seeds in the ground and get a full bloom in the months of Spring.  Rake the ground slightly with a rake hand broadcast your seeds and re-rake the area once more and then water it all in. If possible, sow the seeds before a rain storm.

Feel free to stop by the Nursery and talk to staff if you have questions. We’re here to help!
