Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and producer Frank Simpson are proud to present “Getting Native,” an ongoing project to help gardeners bring the beauty and craft of landscaping with California native plants home.
The “Getting Native” website and Facebook page host a growing number of short videos focused on a particular topic and offer tips for success in planning, plant selection and maintaining California native plants in your home landscape.
The project, which began as a PBS series and aired on KVCS in Fall and Winter 2009, aims to show homeowners how to transform their water consumptive gardens into beautiful landscapes that are well suited for Southern California’s Mediterranean climate. The PBS series takes viewers through a number of complete renovations—from turf removal to planting and maintenance of drought-tolerant plants.
“Getting Native” plants to be back on the air this winter on PBS, but the newest avatar of Getting Native features short videos posted on their Facebook page and website. In addition to videos, the Getting Native website is packed with helpful reference documents and links on topics such as weed abatement and planting container grown plants.
Frank Simpson, writer and producer of “Getting Native,” received a degree in horticulture at the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin, Ireland, and degrees in landscape architecture from CSU Pomona.
Upcoming videos, already on the video editor’s desk, include demonstrations to help identify soil conditions and weed abatement techniques. Become a fan of
