Merhaba from Istanbul

Merhaba from Istanbul,

After two long flights and two delays due to medical emergencies we arrived in Istanbul.  At one point there was some thought we would land in Greenland. Upon arriving in Istanbul we moved into the Hotel Peninsula and went for a long walk through the grounds of the Topika Palace.  Evenings in Istanbul are interesting.  The bustling street-life, sounds and smells are quite exotic.  I, the light sleeper, enjoy the very early morning call to prayer and find myself awake and anticipating it, although Clyde would prefer to sleep.

Merhaba from Istanbul,

Today is busy.  The evening before we left Claremont Clyde visited the state department website and found that my key destination, Van, had a travel alert.  Staff at the Peninsula Hotel is from various towns in eastern Turkey so we consulted with each of them and others we have met in the Sultanahmet on our previous stays.  We will avoid Van and Diyarbakir, places I planned to visit, but will travel north of these destinations.  By tomorrow morning we should hear more details of where to travel.  We should also generally avoid Mardin but everyone thought a quick visit across from Syria would be possible.  I am ready to revise our trip plans for this more northern area.  The bloom period will also be later so each segment of our trip must be rethought.  I have the Bosphorus to view as I work on the hotel’s roof terrace.

Gule gule,

Carol
