New Fiddleheads and Fronds

January 9, 2020

We have gotten over 5 inches of rain since the chaparral ferns were planted, and several of them have new fiddleheads of bright green, fuzzy white, or reddish brown that are about to unfurl, while others have already unfurled some new fronds. Ferns in both locations of the garden seem to be doing well, with no discernible difference thus far between those planted on the slope by the Majestic Oak, and those in the flat location in the Plant Communities. You may also notice a few of the chaparral ferns planted in the Percy Everett garden in full sun, and some recently planted by the dry stream bed on the mesa in a heavier clay soil.
